What is Hash Generator?
A cryptographic hash function takes any input and produces a fixed-length output (the hash) that uniquely represents that data. Even a single character change produces a completely different hash. This makes hashes essential for verifying file integrity, storing passwords, and creating digital fingerprints. DailyDevTools supports MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, SHA-512, and SHA-3, all computed locally using the Web Crypto API.
How to use Hash Generator
- 1Type or paste your text in the input field, or switch to File mode to hash a file
- 2Select your algorithm from the dropdown: MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-512, or SHA-3
- 3The hash updates instantly as you type — no button click needed
- 4Click Copy to copy the hex-encoded hash, or toggle to Base64 output format
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between MD5, SHA-1, and SHA-256?
MD5 and SHA-1 are cryptographically broken for security purposes — use them only for checksums, not passwords or signatures. SHA-256 and above are current standards recommended for all security-sensitive hashing.
Can I reverse a hash to get the original text?
No. Hash functions are one-way by design. There is no algorithm to reverse a hash. Attackers use precomputed rainbow tables against weak inputs, which is why password hashing always needs a salt.
Can I hash a file to verify its integrity?
Yes. Switch to File mode, upload any file, and compare the hash against the checksum published by the software vendor to verify the download is authentic and unmodified.
