What is Cipher Tools?

Classical ciphers are foundational to understanding modern cryptography and are widely used in CTF (Capture The Flag) competitions and computer science education. DailyDevTools' Cipher Tools provides encoding and decoding for Caesar cipher, ROT13, Atbash, Vigenère cipher, Morse code, and more — with explanations of how each cipher works, useful for learning and puzzle-solving.

How to use Cipher Tools

  1. 1Select the cipher type from the dropdown: Caesar, ROT13, Atbash, Vigenère, Morse, etc.
  2. 2Enter your plaintext in the input field
  3. 3For ciphers requiring a key (like Caesar shift or Vigenère), enter the key value
  4. 4Click Encode to encrypt, or Decode/Decode to reverse the cipher

Frequently asked questions

What is ROT13 and when is it used?
ROT13 is a Caesar cipher with a shift of 13. Because the alphabet has 26 letters, applying ROT13 twice returns the original text — making encode and decode the same operation. It's used to obscure spoilers and puzzle answers online.
Are these ciphers secure for protecting sensitive data?
No. Classical ciphers like Caesar, Atbash, and Vigenère are trivially breakable with modern computers and should never be used for real security. For actual encryption, use AES-256 or similar modern algorithms.
What is a Vigenère cipher?
The Vigenère cipher uses a repeating keyword to apply different Caesar shifts to each letter of the message. It was considered unbreakable for centuries but was eventually cracked using the Kasiski examination method.
