What is Text to Speech?
Text to speech (TTS) converts written text into spoken audio using the browser's built-in Web Speech API. It is useful for proofreading (hearing errors you miss when reading), creating voice-overs for quick demos, accessibility testing, and language learning. DailyDevTools' Text to Speech tool supports multiple voices, adjustable speech rate, pitch, and volume — all processing locally without any server.
How to use Text to Speech
- 1Type or paste your text into the input area
- 2Select a voice from the dropdown — available voices depend on your operating system and browser
- 3Adjust the rate (speed), pitch, and volume using the sliders
- 4Click Speak to start playback. Click Pause to pause, Resume to continue, or Stop to end
Frequently asked questions
Which voices are available for text-to-speech?
Available voices come from your operating system's TTS engine and are different on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Chrome also offers high-quality Google TTS voices when online. Most systems include multiple English accents plus other language voices.
Can I download the spoken audio as an MP3 or WAV?
Browser Web Speech API does not expose an audio download option in all browsers. For downloadable TTS audio, use a dedicated TTS service like AWS Polly, Google Cloud TTS, or ElevenLabs which provide audio file exports.
What is the maximum text length for text-to-speech?
Browser TTS works best on short to medium passages. Very long texts may be silently truncated by some browsers. For long documents, the tool automatically splits text into chunks and speaks them sequentially.
