What is DNS Lookup?

DNS (Domain Name System) is the internet's phonebook — it translates human-readable domain names into IP addresses that computers use to communicate. DailyDevTools' DNS Lookup tool queries live DNS records for any domain and returns all record types: A (IPv4), AAAA (IPv6), CNAME, MX (mail servers), TXT (SPF/DKIM/verification), NS (nameservers), and SOA — useful for debugging email delivery, verifying DNS propagation, and configuring domains.

How to use DNS Lookup

  1. 1Enter any domain name (e.g., example.com) in the input field
  2. 2Select the record type to query: A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, NS, or ALL
  3. 3Click Lookup — results appear within seconds, queried from live DNS servers
  4. 4Use the TTL column to see how long each record is cached by resolvers

Frequently asked questions

Why do DNS changes take time to propagate?
DNS records are cached by resolvers worldwide according to their TTL (Time To Live) value. A TTL of 3600 means resolvers cache the old record for up to 1 hour before checking for updates. Lowering TTL before a migration speeds up propagation.
What is a CNAME record?
A CNAME (Canonical Name) record is an alias — it points a domain or subdomain to another domain name rather than an IP address. For example, www.example.com → example.com. The final destination must have an A record.
How do I verify my SPF and DKIM records?
SPF is stored as a TXT record on your root domain. DKIM is stored as a TXT record at a selector subdomain (e.g., google._domainkey.example.com). Query TXT records for your domain to inspect both.
