Frequently asked questions

How is reading time calculated?
Reading time is estimated at 200 words per minute, which is the average adult silent reading speed. Technical content is typically read slower (150 wpm) and simple content faster (250 wpm).
Does it count hyphenated words as one or two words?
Hyphenated words (like 'state-of-the-art') are counted as one word, matching the convention used by most word processors including Microsoft Word and Google Docs.
Can I use this to check Twitter or LinkedIn character limits?
Yes. The character counter shows count with and without spaces. Twitter's 280-character limit counts all characters including spaces, punctuation, and URLs (which count as 23 characters regardless of length).
