How does IBAN validation work?

IBAN validation uses the MOD-97 algorithm: move the first four characters to the end, convert letters to numbers (A=10, B=11...), then check that the resulting number mod 97 equals 1. A valid IBAN always passes this check.

What countries use IBAN?

IBAN is mandatory in the EU and used in 77+ countries including the UK, Switzerland, Norway, and most of the Middle East. The US, Canada, and Australia do not use IBAN — they use routing numbers, sort codes, and BSB numbers respectively.

What is the difference between IBAN and SWIFT/BIC?

IBAN identifies a specific bank account (the recipient). SWIFT/BIC (Bank Identifier Code) identifies the bank itself. International wire transfers typically require both: IBAN to identify the account and BIC to route to the correct bank.
