What is the difference between VAT and sales tax?

Sales tax (used in the US) is only charged at the final point of sale to the consumer. VAT is charged at every stage of production and distribution, but businesses reclaim the VAT they paid on inputs. The end consumer pays the same total tax in both systems.

How do I remove VAT from a price?

Divide the gross price by (1 + VAT rate/100). For a £120 price including 20% VAT: £120 / 1.20 = £100 net price, and £20 VAT. Never subtract the percentage directly (that gives a wrong answer).

What are common VAT rates around the world?

UK: 20% standard, 5% reduced, 0% zero-rated. EU countries range from 17% (Luxembourg) to 27% (Hungary). Australia: 10% GST. Canada: 5% GST federal plus provincial taxes. The US has no federal VAT.
