What is UTM Builder?
UTM parameters are tags appended to URLs to track marketing campaign performance in Google Analytics and other analytics platforms. The five UTM parameters — utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term, and utm_content — tell analytics tools exactly where traffic came from. DailyDevTools' UTM Builder generates properly encoded campaign URLs and previews how they will appear in your analytics dashboard.
How to use UTM Builder
- 1Enter your destination URL (the page you want to track traffic to)
- 2Fill in utm_source (where traffic comes from: google, newsletter, twitter), utm_medium (the channel: cpc, email, social), and utm_campaign (your campaign name)
- 3Optionally add utm_term (for paid search keywords) and utm_content (for A/B test variants)
- 4Click Generate to create the full tracking URL, then Copy or shorten with a URL shortener
Frequently asked questions
Are UTM parameters case sensitive?
Yes. Google Analytics treats UTM values as case-sensitive: utm_source=Google and utm_source=google appear as two separate sources. Establish a consistent naming convention (all lowercase is recommended) and stick to it.
Do UTM parameters hurt SEO?
No, if used correctly. URLs with UTM parameters should not be canonicalized or indexed. Google Analytics strips UTM parameters from the URL in reports. Use rel=canonical or parameter exclusion in Google Search Console to prevent duplicate indexing.
What should I use for utm_medium?
Follow Google's recommended medium values for consistency: cpc (paid search), email, social, referral, organic (don't tag organic — it's detected automatically), display (banner ads), affiliate.
