What is MAC Address Generator?

MAC (Media Access Control) addresses are 48-bit hardware identifiers assigned to network interfaces. They are used in network configuration, virtual machine setup, testing network software, and bypassing certain MAC-based access controls. DailyDevTools' MAC Address Generator creates random IEEE 802.3 compliant MAC addresses in standard formats (XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX) with options for specific OUI prefixes.

How to use MAC Address Generator

  1. 1Click Generate to create a random MAC address
  2. 2Select the format: colon-separated (aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff), hyphen-separated (aa-bb-cc-dd-ee-ff), or no delimiter
  3. 3Toggle 'Locally Administered' to set the locally administered bit, or 'Unicast/Multicast' to control the group bit
  4. 4Use Bulk Generate to create multiple MAC addresses at once for test environments

Frequently asked questions

What is a MAC address used for?
MAC addresses identify network interface cards at the Data Link Layer (Layer 2). They are used by routers to track devices on a local network, by DHCP servers to assign consistent IPs, and in network access control (NAC) policies.
What is a locally administered MAC address?
MAC addresses have a bit that indicates whether they are globally unique (assigned by IEEE to manufacturers) or locally administered (assigned by a network administrator). Locally administered addresses are used for VMs, VPNs, and testing.
What is an OUI in a MAC address?
The first three bytes of a MAC address are the OUI (Organizationally Unique Identifier) assigned to the network device manufacturer. You can look up which company made a device by checking its OUI against the IEEE registry.
