What is the best image to use as a favicon source?
Use a square image with a simple, recognizable design that remains legible at 16×16 pixels. Complex logos lose detail at small sizes. A single letterform or simple icon works best.
What HTML tags do I need for favicons?
At minimum: <link rel='icon' href='/favicon.ico'>. For full cross-platform support, also add apple-touch-icon (180px PNG) for iOS, and manifest.json with 192px and 512px icons for Android PWAs.
Do I still need a .ico file?
Yes, for legacy browser compatibility. The .ico format supports multiple resolutions in a single file. Modern browsers prefer PNG or SVG, but older browsers and Windows taskbar pinning still rely on favicon.ico.
